Greenwashing is the term we use to call out an ESG strategy or an impact for pretending to care about the environment, but really do not.
It is undermining the core principles of which the acronym stands for, which hurts ESG’s credibility.
Unlike energy or utility companies, whose impact on the environment is relatively straightforward to quantify, food companies’ complex operations makes them much harder to evaluate.
Therefore let us use some simple common sense.
- What is more environment friendly.
Boiling your oat groats at home for breakfast or or having a ESG feel good oatmilk late at Starbucks?
- What is better for your health.

I’m not at all advocating that we shoudl stop drinking oat milk, or not going to Starbucks. But I am advocating for that we stop pretending that we are healthy people taking good care our environment when we consume highly processed food, or when we are idling our cars in the drive through lane at Starbucks. Just because they tell us we are.
