When did it become intrusive to pick up the phone and call someone (without a previous appointment)?

For the vast majority of my life, things worked like this:

1.) I want to talk with Bill

2.) I call Bill

3.) We talk

Now, I need to text or email Bill. We go back and forth a few times. Eventually we decide on a date far into the future. We talk then, unless something comes up and we need to reschedule.

Why is this an improvement?

If you want to talk with me, call me. +1-407-716-3344

If I can’t talk, I’ll call you back.

If you call me and I’m busy, I won’t be hurt or offended, I won’t think badly of you. I’ll just call you back later.

What does it say about our society that we now consider it intrusive to say hi?
